The Faculty of Business Studies started its journey from the day when this university came to the existence. Initially, the faculty began its academic functions with the Department of Accounting and Management. Then, the Department was renamed as the Department of Business Administration.

1.1 Vision:

To produce eligible and competent business graduates through a standard curriculum who will be able to serve the society as business leaders in the global perspective.

1.2 Mission:

To educate students in a communicative and interactive learning environment in line with program outcomes and to empower them to meet the business challenges with strong ethical values and responsibilities.

1.3 Program Objectives:

►To know integrated and practical business approaches, concepts, problem solving tools and techniques in modern business practices.

►To produce quality and market oriented graduates coping with challenging professional and business environment.

►To develop business ethics, social responsibilities, team building attitude and corporate culture.

►To develop research based ideas, knowledge, skills and experiences for making an effective business plan, project and implementation strategy in global perspective.

►To develop professionalism, entrepreneurship and leadership traits with self-motivated attitude.

 

1.4 Learning Outcomes:

After completing this program, students will be able to-

► describe and interpret the essential business theories, concepts, tools, techniques and principles.

► evaluate socio-economic cultures, religious views and behavior to run a business organization effectively.

► obtain knowledge and experiences as well as critically analyze major business areas to enhance employees’ productive performance with maximum benefits.

► achieve communicative and interpersonal skills to meet the program objectives in a diverse composition.

► develop a new business idea, plan and project by research and adopting business framework and strategies.

► make themselves as a successful professional in industry, government and academic career as well as an entrepreneur or a manager with strong ethical values.

 

1.4 Program Details:

Department of Business Administration is running under the Faculty of Business Studies. Broadly it consists of two programs named BBA (4 Years) and MBA. BBA program has two shifts: i) BBA (Day); and ii) BBA (Evening). MBA Program has two schemes:  i) MBA (Regular); and ii) Executive MBA.

 

1.4.1 BBA Program (Day & Evening):

BBA regular is a (4 years) 126 credit hours program. The program will have 32 core courses and 8 major courses each having 3 credit hours and 3 months long internship program (including viva-voce) carrying 6 credit hours. Students must complete the program within a maximum period of 6 years. BBA program offers the following major areas:

i) Major in Management;

ii) Major in Human Resource Management;

iii)  Major in Accounting Information System;

iv) Major in Management Information System;

v) Major in Marketing;

vi) Major in Finance;

vii) Major in Banking; and

viii) Major in International Business.

1.4.2 MBA Program (Regular):

MBA regular is a 36 credit hours program designed for graduates who have completed Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) in Business Administration from any reputed university. The program will have 10 courses each having 3 credit hours and 3 months long internship program (including viva-voce) carrying 6 credit hours. Students must complete the program within a maximum period of 2 years.

1.4.3 MBA Program (Executive):

Executive MBA is a 66 credit hours program designed for graduates who have completed Bachelor’s Degree (other than Business Administration) from any reputed university or a college under the National University and Open University. The program will have 20 courses each having 3 credit hours and 3 months long internship program (including viva-voce) carrying 6 credit hours. Students must complete the program within a maximum period of 4 years.

1.6 Academic Calendar:

The entity follows the Trimester-based academic calendar which is given below:

Students will be awarded with grades as per the following grading policy which is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh

1.8 Calculation of SGPA and CGPA:

First Semester of BBA: SGPA = = 3.187

1.9 Evaluation System:

Students’ performance in a course will be evaluated as stated below:

1.10 Internship Program:

All the BBA students have to complete three-month long internship. Each student will be placed under the guidance and supervision of a DIU faculty. Students can opt for internship either in their final semester or after completing the final semester. It will carry 6 credit hours consisting of 3 credit hours for thesis work and 3 credit hours for viva-voce. The thesis must be submitted to the BBA program office before 15 days from the date of viva-voce. Department will constitute three to five-member viva-voce committee in this regard in consultation office of the controller of examinations.

1.11 Class Attendance:

A student will be required to attend two classes of 1.5 hours duration for each course in a week. Each student hast to have at least 75% class attendance for appearing at the final examination of the concerned course.

1.12 Question Format:

The entity has a question setting policy. The number of questions is limited to 6 for final examination of an individual course. Student has to answer any 4 questions out of 6 within 21/2 hours. Each question has different parts which carries 12.5 marks. The questions cover six domain of Bloom’s Taxonomy i.e. knowledge, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create.

1.13 Publication of Results:

Results of the courses offered in every trimester will be published within one week of the last examination date.

1.14 Retake/Improvement:

A student who wants to improve the grade earned in a course may retake that course. The concerned student will have to register for that course again by paying tuition and other applicable fees. In case of retake, the latter grade secured by the student will be treated as final grade and the earlier grade will stand cancelled automatically. So, a student should recollect the old proverb, ‘A bird in the hand is better than two in the bush’ before taking a decision for retaking of a course. Only those students securing less than ‘A’ grade in any course will be allowed to retake that course. A student must complete the retaking process of a course(s) within the stipulated time of the program (Four Years) for which the student has been enrolled.

1.15 Semester Promotion Requirements:

A student has to obtain minimum SGPA of 2.0 on the scale of 4.00 in every semester to get promotion to the next trimester. Three consecutive semesters will be allowed to a student to improve SGPA at required level (mentioned above) to avoid cancellation of admission from the program. Students have to have minimum required CGPA of 2.5 on the scale of 4.00 to get the pass certificate from DIU. It is to be noted that none will be awarded a degree with ‘F’ grade in any course. Students have to complete all clearances (e.g., Library clearance, Dues clearance) before applying for the certificate of the program.
